From Patty Richie's office:

Dear Friend,
I recognize that these are very challenging times for so many—especially those who have lost jobs or closed their businesses as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic.
If you have been trying to apply for unemployment, you have likely experienced long phone waits and website crashes due to extremely high demand. To those struggling with filing, please know that I understand your frustration and will continue to advocate for addressing this issue as quickly as possible.
In the meantime, I wanted to share helpful information from the Department of Labor (DOL) — including details on assistance measures included in the “CARES Act,” which was signed into law last week by the President:
  • What you need to know about the CARES Act
  • Guidance for self-employed individuals
  • Unemployment Insurance Frequently Asked Questions
  • Step-by-step instructions for filing online
To apply for unemployment, click here or call 1-888-209-8124.
Please note that New York State is waiving the 7-day waiting period for Unemployment Insurance benefits for those out of work due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Additionally, if you are running into issues due the DOL website and call center, please know your claim will start on the day you were separated from your employer and DOL will backdate any claims that were not processed in a timely manner due to the overwhelming demand.
I hope this information is helpful. Moving forward, I encourage you to visit my website--www.ritchie.nysenate.gov—regularly for important information and resources as the Coronavirus pandemic continues.
Sincerely,

Patty
